JRPG
RPG
Developed by Grasshopper Manufacture (Suda 51's studio), Contact is one of the most criminally underrated games on the system. It features zaniness and charm reminiscent of Earthbound, with a protagonist who directly addresses the player throughout the game. The dual-screen narrative design breaks the fourth wall in innovative ways, mixing real-time action combat with oddball humor, extensive exploration, and a massive collection of costumes that grant unique abilities. Despite universal critical acclaim, poor sales timing (released alongside Mother 3) left it obscure.

JRPG
RPG
Often called one of the best stories on the NDS, Radiant Historia is a time-travel RPG where players navigate between alternate timelines to prevent world desertification. The game features innovative puzzle mechanics that blend seamlessly with combat, complex narrative arcs, and character development that stands among the finest in the genre. Despite critical acclaim, it arrived late in the DS lifecycle when the platform's audience had largely moved on, causing it to be overlooked despite exceptional storytelling.

Adventure
This noir-inspired interactive detective game requires players to hold the DS vertically, a unique design choice that underscored its innovative approach. Players follow Kyle Hyde, a former NYC detective investigating a disappearance connected to Room 215 in an eponymous hotel. The game features point-and-click exploration, deep interrogations with puzzle solving, and multiple endings based on player choices. Despite being consistently praised for its superb writing, distinctive visual style, and engaging mystery, it received limited marketing and commercial attention.

RPG
Created by Platinum Games, Infinite Space is one of the most ambitious games the studio ever released. Players manage entire fleets of customizable spaceships and engage in tactical space combat against enemy armadas in a sprawling sci-fi anime setting. The sheer amount of customization options is insane, with hundreds of possible ship configurations and upgrade paths. Despite critical praise for its innovation and depth, it remained virtually unknown outside Japan due to its niche appeal and complex gameplay systems.

Puzzle
Considered by many to be THE hidden gem of the entire DS library, Knights in the Nightmare is one of the most unique JRPGs ever created. The game borrows gameplay elements from Ikaruga's bullet-hell mechanics, Valkyrie Profile's positioning strategy, and Final Fantasy Tactics' grid-based combat, blending them into something wholly original. The stylus-controlled battlefield requires precise timing and positioning while managing knight units. The game's niche appeal and steep learning curve meant it received minimal marketing and sales, yet it remains a masterpiece of innovative design.

The spiritual successor to the cult classic Tail Concerto, Solatorobo features anthropomorphic animals riding mecha suits for combat and exploration. The game delivers a beautiful, surprisingly varied world with engaging boss fights and charming character interactions. The combination of action RPG mechanics with exploration and a memorable cast makes it a standout experience. Despite being developed by Cyberconnect2, it received limited international release and remains largely unknown to Western gamers, missing out on recognition it truly deserved.

Adventure
Adapted from an original PS2 game by Grasshopper Manufacture, this surreal adventure game follows Sumio Mondo, a searcher who finds misplaced valuables. While on a mission at an island resort, Mondo becomes locked in a time loop, creating a mysterious and mind-bending narrative. The game oozes unique style with its distinctive art direction, unusual puzzle design, and philosophical themes. Despite critical appreciation for its originality and charm, vague objectives and unconventional structure led to poor sales and minimal recognition.

Simulation
The third entry in the Rune Factory series shows massive improvements in combat mechanics and farming depth compared to earlier entries. This action RPG perfectly blends farming simulation with monster-taming, dungeon exploration, and real-time combat. Players can tame monsters, cultivate crops, manage relationships with townspeople, and engage in challenging battles. Despite being the most polished entry in the franchise at the time, it arrived on a declining DS and received minimal marketing attention, causing it to be overshadowed by more prominent RPGs.
Aliens Infestation
Nintendo DS
Developed by Gearbox, Aliens Infestation is a Metroidvania-style shooter inspired by the original Alien films, delivering the best gaming translation of the franchise until Alien: Isolation. The game features 20 recruitable characters with permanent deaths, creating emotional stakes and replayability. Combining the exploration and progression of Metroidvania games with tight shooting mechanics, it demonstrated how well third-party action games could work on the DS. Despite critical praise, it suffered from poor marketing and overshadowing by other late-DS releases.

Compilation
Based on the cult-classic Japanese TV variety show GameCenter CX, Retro Game Challenge is a collection of NES-inspired challenges designed to test players' retro gaming skills. The game functions as a gaming time capsule with eight complete mini-games, each with their own depth and gameplay mechanics. It earned universal critical acclaim for its charming presentation, nostalgic appeal, and innovative concept. However, it sold poorly in America due to limited marketing and being released at a time when the DS audience was shifting to newer platforms, despite being called one of the most creative games on the system.
